While all builds support a specific business objective, the first build focuses
on the infrastructure while delivering a specific business value. This build is
the initial execution of the carefully crafted strategic plan developed during the
Information Architecture phase. A major component of this plan is the development
of the warehouse architecture and the selection of the technology tools to support
both the database and information delivery requirements of the organization. This
first stage is punctuated by numerous decision points regarding the practical application
of those technology choices (ETL staging, calculation engines, security requirements)
that have a direct impact on the end-user experience as well as subsequent builds.
A major advantage of the iterative process in BI/Warehouse implementations is the
ability to build upon the existing infrastructure of the first build. This prevents
“re-inventing” the wheel at every iteration while providing an opportunity to improve
the infrastructure as a whole. TobiasGroup applies extensive practical
experience in applying strategic objectives to each build and recognizing opportunities
for corrective measures to an existing framework.
When TobiasGroup's first engagement is during a subsequent build, much of
the focus is not only on the iterative result but on steps to be taken to increase
the effectiveness and timeliness of following requirements.
